1. Famed Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry donned a gorgeous beetle wing dress as Lady Macbeth in 1888.
Painting by John Singer Sargent.
ETA: ornamentedbeing let me know that the National Trust is currently trying to raise money to preserve the actual dress being worn in this painting. I’m unfortunately an ocean and half a continent away from the UK, but here’s the information for anyone who might be able to attend and help save this awesome dress.
The National Trust needs now to raise a further £30,000 to ensure the dress’s conservation and presentation to the public. Along with the London Beach Hotel in Tenterden, Kent, the Trust have organised a Dinner Dance on Friday 25 February, from 7pm at the London Beach Hotel. Tickets cost £30 per person with a minimum of £25 going directly to the conservation appeal. The evening, comprising a three course evening meal and dancing to a live band will be a fantastic occasion. Places are booking fast so reserve  your tickets by calling the National Trust at Smallhythe Place on 01580 762334
