I feel it is my duty to inform you that for the next few posts this is about to temporarily become a James Tissot appreciation blog.
On the Thames, painted by Tissot in 1874 shows a young lady wearing a gorgeously draped cotton day dress typical of casual summer wear in the 1870s.
It is also of interest to note the oarsmen, being both working class and male and thus not as strictly bound by the Victorian rules of propriety, are wearing what would more or less be considered underwear.
